The Fashionisto

Comme Des Garçons - Fall/Winter 2012 - Paris Fashion Week

Androgyny Now–Hidden under a mop of jet black disheveled hair, the boys of Comme des Garçons told a tale of unadulterated rebellion. Fashions for the elegant punk, a long coat, pulled in at the waist delivered charm in quaint varieties, ranging from polka dots and somber black to discreet etchings. Complemented with pleated skirts and cape jackets, large floral prints made a divine statement, knowing no bounds and lending Rei Kawakubo’s misfit a soft touch, fused with moderate angst. Finished with large bows tied at the neck and petite heels, ready for the catwalk, Comme des Garçons delivered a welcomed collection of means and mode.

Comme Des Garçons Homme Plus Men's - Fall 2012

Rei Kawakubo seemed to summon a punkish, yet romantic Victorian schoolboy as her muse this season, in a collection that blurred gender lines. Linen smocks, knee-length pleated skirts and a blown-up damask rose print on a voluminous trapeze coat were among the puzzling, ostensibly feminine elements. But Kawakubo played these pieces off more mannish fare. Textured wool blazers were paired with cropped pinstripe pants, while another blazer was done in patchwork of tweed, tartan, polka dots and pinstripes. The jet-black mullet wigs that every model wore added to this collection’s otherworldly air.

Fashion Silhouettes, Sharply Drawn
By Cathy Horyn

Last season, Rei Kawakubo used bridal lace in her men’s collection; this time, she went for old-time pink roses on gray suiting, sweet polka dots and boxy shorts or culottes with jackets that evoked the classic Chanel cardigan. And the shoes came with little heels and socks with boldly colored ribbing, while the models wore Joan Jett wigs, at times with a beribboned bowler hat. All these elements felt warmly and securely Comme des Garçons, but perhaps the most appealing thing about the show today was the silhouette: longish and free at the waist, with those full shorts (or knee-length skirts) and, naturally, hairy calves before the splash of pink at the ankles. One impulse was romantic — Jane Eyre, I thought — the other punk.

Comme Des Garçons Homme

With his back-combed tizz of jet-black hair, his polka-dot pantsuit, and his girly red shoes, the first model in Comme des Garçons’ show today could have been Johnny Thunders looking for his next New York Dolls gig. The Dolls’ carelessness found its most florid expression in their clothes, gender-free bits of vintage tat and glitz. The black bouclé jacket with trailing threads of lamé from this collection would probably have ended up on guitarist Sylvain Sylvain. But then, several outfits later in the show, there were pinstriped skirts and little hats attached to heads with moiré ribbons and, with that bird’s nest hair, the boys started to look like the hell-raising schoolgirls of St. Trinian’s.
And right there, in the shadow land between the New York Dolls and the girls of St. Trinian’s, Rei Kawakubo had nailed the theme of her new collection: Neither Man Nor Woman. She was helped by the fact that the style most akin to the one she had consistently applied to her models was goth, which has an innately sexless essence. The bird’s nest hair could have come from the wigs stand of The Cure’s Robert Smith, King of Goth. The doomy, echoing soundtrack could equally easily have come from Cure acolytes. And the clothes that straddled the gender gap, neither fish nor fowl, included swing-back coats appliquéd with Gothic roses; cropped, tapered urchin pants; brocaded tartan suits; and an abstracted naïve print of zodiac signs, which, here, had a Blair Witch feel. It seemed absolutely appropriate that the collection looked its best when the models massed listlessly together at show’s end. It wasn’t just strength in numbers. It was also much easier to appreciate the tribalism that underpins the Comme des Garçons ethos. This time, it wasn’t “like the boys,” or even “like the girls.” It was “like us all.”
